The Country Club stands with all minorities, especially those of color. Our multi-cultural staff is a family and acts as one. Our hearts ache as yours does.
The recent, senseless killing of George Floyd by an officer of the Minneapolis police department is a tragedy bringing further light to the systematic, historical, and unrelenting prejudice, disenfranchisement, and blatant oppression that the black community of the United States has suffered since prior to the inception of our country. There are many other black Americans, named and unnamed, that have suffered a similarly vicious and unjust fate as George Floyd. This can no longer continue.
Black culture is a cornerstone of American ethos. Not only due to its inherent quality but also due to the fact that nearly all of American culture was built on the backs of black Americans. Much of our music, food, and dance culture is owed foundationally to the voluntary and involuntary contributions of the black community.
The Country Club (staff, management, and ownership) wants to acknowledge the contributions that the black community has made to New Orleans. We benefit directly from culinary and cultural traditions historically rooted in the black culture of New Orleans, without which we would be left with very little. We cannot stand idly by and allow the injustices of this world to continue.
Although we are not open for business currently, we are making financial contributions to the New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice (www.nowcrj.org ) and to The Black Trans Advocacy Coalition (www.blacktrans.org ) and we encourage everyone in the community, who is financially capable, to contribute to supporting organizations as well. As we are able to reopen and return to a state of steady business, we will continue to pursue opportunities to support black New Orleanians as well as the larger black community in this country.
We would like to encourage everyone to support black-owned businesses in New Orleans www.neworleans.com/things-to-do/multicultural/black-owned-businesses-in-new-orleans/. Not just during this time but for as long as they remain a part of our community. We stand in solidarity with the black community and all other marginalized communities and believe real, effectual change must be enacted. Change that allows ALL Americans equal opportunity, equal standing in law, and equal treatment by those whom we entrust to enforce it.
Together, change is possible.
